So, in case anyone is actually checking this blog, I’m not in the country anymore!

My husband Brian and I were invited to serve in the Peace Corps and began our adventure abroad in the Dominican Republic in August of 2010. We will be here until October 2012, and as you can imagine, that’s not really affording a lot of opportunities to work on graphic design. Hopefully I’ll have a few, and will update when I can, but all that will probably be on hold until we settle back into the states in 2012.

World Vision – Child Ambassadors

The Child Ambassadors are one of the 2 main programs in my department. They are AMAZING volunteers that speak about child sponsorship within their sphere of influence, and in so doing, get thousands of kids sponsored every year. I am continually humbled and amazed at how much these folks do because of their passion and love for the poor.

Lori, our National Director asked me to make this one sheet describing the program for a recent New Employee Orientation.

The idea was to create a summary of the whole program, but make it more interesting to look at than just text on the page.

Life at World Vision

I’ve been at World Vision for about 7 months now, and it has been a whirlwind of awesome. I am seriously loving my job. It’s been super challenging – and really new for me to work at such a big organization. But I feel like I’m getting the hang of things and really getting into a groove with my team (which is also awesome by the way).

I’m also getting to the point where I’m working on things I can actually share on here as well! When I first started, a lotof my work was administrative and not really blog-worthy, but I’ve been using my creative juices as of late and I’m excited to get my most recent stuff posted.

Also, I have new kinds of things to post! A large part of my job has been to establish the social media campaigns for my department (Volunteer and Sponsor Engagement. Basically, sponsorship volunteers.) so I’ll be posting the work I’ve done for a Facebook Fan Page, a Twitter Stream, and a couple of YouTube pages. I’ve also been doing some video work, mainly for a Volunteer Appreciation week we did this month.

Finally, I’ve had a new project for the past month that I’m SUPER stoked about. I’m creating my first website!

Easter 2010 – Redemption Church

This year’s theme for Easter was “Life Outside the Tomb”. Pastor Brian wanted something that looked like coming out of the darkness – what it would look like to emerge from a tomb. I had a hard time finding an image I really liked to start with (since I’m doing this for church and for free, I always use free images I can find online rather than buying stock photos), so I settled for this one looking up and out of a cave.

But, I really liked the effect of the light shining through so I decided to go with it. However, our projector is really weak, so the team decided it wouldn’t show up very well when we actually used it at the service.

Craig Fletcher (another member of Redemption’s communications team) found the perfect photo, so we combined efforts with his photo and my graphic work on the text and logo. Here’s the final product:

Bare Knuckled Grace of Jesus – Redemption Church

Here’s the artwork I did for Redemption’s current series on Galatians: The Bare Knuckled Grace of Jesus.

I realized after we finalized it that the fist is technically covered in a bandage and not literally “bare”…but, I think it still captures the raw and gritty feel we were going for.

Something Wonderful This Way Comes…

So, I haven’t posted in a while, but there hasn’t been much to post. I’ve been working full time again, but my job doesn’t really have the opportunity for design that my last one did.

My new title is “Sponsor Engagement Coordinator” and I’m working at the World Vision headquarters in Federal Way. It’s been awesome, and so encouraging to work for such an amazing and well run organization. Basically, I’m working a lot with volunteers and child sponsorship. Very cool.

On to recent materials!

Redemption Church has finally moved on from our Jonah series to our Christmas series. We’re doing the four weeks of advent, and the theme is “Something Wonderful This Way Comes.” Pastor Brian didn’t have a specific vision for this…just something that conveyed mystery and hope.

I was afraid this would be too Christmas-y and not enough Jesus-y, but I loved the image of a snowy ornament on a tree in the forest. It’s just out of place enough, that it gave me that sense of familiarity and excitement when you know that Christmas and all that entails is just around the corner.

Also, I found the font on www.dafont.com. It’s great because you can look at it and know that it’s Christmas, but it doesn’t have snowflakes or candy canes.

Sorrisi Decor

So, Sorrisi Decor is a fabulous company started by my Pastor’s Wife, Elisa Hope. Sorrisi is Italian for “Smile” and Elisa sells tooth fairy pillows (special decorative pillows for kids with a hidden pocket for the tooth fairy to pick up the tooth and leave the cash) and gives 50% of the profits to Medical Teams International, helping kids in Liberia receive dental care. Two words: Super Awesome.

So, Elisa emailed me earlier this week saying that she was trying to figure out how to make some postcards for the events she goes to to promote Sorrisi. I offered to help, and this is what we came up with! A 5.5×4.25 post card, and a smaller 6×2.75 version.

Redemption Brochure

The following is a brochure I’ve been working on for Redemption Church. We wanted something that would be a quick and easy way for people to learn about who we are and what we believe, and answer some basic questions (like do you have a program for my kids?) The text was all written by Pastor Brian, and I tried to capture the look/feel of the website (www.theredemption.org) with the parchment. It’s not super colorful and complicated because we’re going to try to print everything in house to save money. There might still be a few more edits, but this is where we’re at right now.

Redemption Re.Launch Invite

Redemption Church is having a get together before the service in a couple of weeks to celebrate our re-launch. Here’s the little invite I put together with Pastor Brian (he wrote the text). It’s a 4.25×5.5 quarter page card printed front and back.

Quick Updates

So, the past month has been interesting. I was laid off from my job at Life Choices during an acquisition by another organization, and I’ve been looking for a new job. Hence, you won’t be seeing any more SHARE or Life Choices materials. However, I was contracted a few weeks ago by a local Dental Lab to create some new marketing materials for them (only a few hours a week, not full time). If you don’t know what a Dental Lab is, it’s basically where they make crowns, implants, veneers, etc, and all that cool stuff that goes into cosmetic dentistry. It’s been fascinating to learn about, and the owners are amazing people.

Also, church materials have been slow for a little bit because we’re in the process of re-branding, and we’ve just decided on a new logo that was designed by a great guy Craig at church.

Anyway, now that I’m starting to get going on the Dental Lab materials and the Redemption branding is starting to get into place, it’s going to mean a lot of cool stuff coming up pretty soon. I just posted my Jonah series visual, but I’m also currently working on a new brochure and postcard invite for the church that I’m really excited about. As for the Dental lab, I’m working on a couple of different items for them including a brochure, a referral program, and a newsletter.

No word on a job yet, but I do have an interview on Monday I’m pretty excited about. I’ve lost count of how many applications I’ve filled out, and I know I’d work hard for anyone that hired me, but you just have to be patient in this kind of economy. And I’ll be honest, I’ve really enjoyed the time off.
